I'd like to tell you about the volunteer action my students and I participated in, a few months ago. Namely, in Serbia people have to pay 18% VAT on baby food and other baby products such as diapers, car seats, etc. A Serbian TV station B92 started a campaign "The Fight for Babies" , the goal of which was to raise money for purchasing incubators and other equipment for maternity wards in hospitals. Owing to many sponsors and donators, many hospitals in Serbia received new, modern baby incubators. You can also participate in this campaign as there are still maternity wards waiting for new equipment, so if you wish to donate, you can find the necessary bank information HERE.
The follow-up of the campaign was the national signing of The Petition for revoking the bill for VAT on baby food and equipment. In six days, in many towns in Serbia, volunteers collected signatures of people supporting this initiative. My students and I also set up a booth in the school hall and gathered about 350 signatures from students' parents, passers-by, school staff. In the photo you can see me signing the petition papers, and my students wearing the bibs with the symbol of the campaign - a baby's fist.
The final result was 180 000 signatures of support which were handed in to the Serbian Parliament and the Prime Minister. On March 29th 2012, the Serbian Parliament passed a new bill stating that VAT would be refunded for purchasing powdered milk, baby strollers, cribs, high chairs, car seats and diapers.
